To avoid this type of block, I'm increasingly taking a view that type="source" should be the default value for pkgDep() and all other functions.

Right, since source is always available. Though is there any negative aspect of using source? e.g. are binaries faster to install or download?

The advantage of using binaries is that the end user may not have the toolchain available to build packages from source (when they include compiled code).

@revodavid Right. Good point. For Windows and OSX, try binary first, then source if no binary available.
