In case anyone needs to import Ninja Ripper v1.7.1 RIP files into Blender 2.79 or 2.80:

Please provide some sample data for me to test this and get the plugin working. I don't use NinjaRipper anymore. Though if you do provide sample data, please either have it be public domain data, or e-mail it directly to me at [email protected] so non-public model data isn't out on the public Internet forever.

Thanks, I'm working on this some now. It's a mostly-binary format, and I haven't found any documentation yet for how to read v1.6's output.

Are there any options Ninja Ripper gives for outputting in different formats? Such as CSV, text, JSON, or XML?

Akaito avatar Akaito commented on July 26, 2024

If Ninja Ripper can still output any plaintext format (CSV, JSON, text, etc.), I'll update my plugin to read that format. Without either plaintext or documentation on the binary dump, I doubt that I'll be putting the necessary time in to reverse-engineer a binary format from Ninja Ripper.

Here's a link of someone's utility that can turn rips into obj files. Maybe the source code could help you with making modifications to this, to be compatible with the current ninjaripper.

If you ever feel like doing it, of course. Just in case, going to leave this mention here. @Akaito

The linked .zip archive of that tool's source is no longer available. I contacted the author to ask if they still had it available and were willing to share it. Unfortunately it was lost some time ago.

That author did say that their code also read Ninja Ripper's .txt output; not the tool's default binary output. If you could check again for a way to get non-binary output from Ninja Ripper, and provide a sample if it's still available, then either (1) that may still be compatible with this Blender importer, or (2) I can update the importer based on a newer sample.

@Akaito I created an account to just leave this here, a bit of digging found a copy uploaded somewhere else. I honestly am just sort of fumbling my way around so I think this is all I can contribute.

I suggest to use pyninjaobj import base code, it can convert all the rip files in an unique OBJ model and it seems more efficient than Rip2Obj and BatchRipToObj. I encourage you to test it.

Akaito avatar Akaito commented on July 26, 2024

@fuzzyhydralisk, thanks for finding a copy of Rip2Obj.

@OscarOG, thanks for the recommendation of pyninjaobj. It looks like the only advantage an updated blender-ninjaripper-importer would have over it is packaging up what pyninjaobj does behind a menu in Blender.
