I think that the Wiki would be a better place for that.

Better yet, a Github page that has the '1..2..3' for displaying and using the font would be awesome. 'Live' example of display and a one-liner for including the font in your page via the Edge API.

How do we implement that Daniel? Do you have an example you could share?

I know how to create a github page, but would need to work on the actual content there-in. I'll fork and investigate. ;-)

Great, thanks!

So, I created a Github page that is a very rough example of what we could create.

http://dwabyick.github.com/Source-Code-Pro/

I used SCP as it made more sense to show the examples! ;-)

A few thoughts here:

  • We should circle internally to make sure Adobe's good with us creating a self-standing Github pages site, vs. http://www.edgefonts.com/
  • We should try to get Source Code Pro as the default font for Github Pages code via their Jekyll Templates!

dwabyick avatar dwabyick commented on July 28, 2024

Regardless, should we link to http://www.edgefonts.com/ to show where to get Source Sans pro and Source Code pro?

miguelsousa avatar miguelsousa commented on July 28, 2024

That looks awesome. Although I think we shouldn't loose sight of what we're trying to accomplish: have a page where the fonts are displayed and where people can get a sense of the design before downloading them. That page can have a link to Adobe Edge Web Fonts (http://html.adobe.com/edge/webfonts/) but I think that helping people find the fonts in the repository is even more important.

I'm not actually seeing the fonts on your GH demo page. Isn't that the point? Show people what the fonts look like. Since I don't think you can embed JavaScript in markdown just take a screenshot.

dwabyick avatar dwabyick commented on July 28, 2024

@miguelsousa We can definitely make the page more like that with a prominent Download link.

@commadelimited You're right that you can't put Javascript in the markdown examples, but you can edit your Github pages template and edit the HTML. That's what I did.

You should be seeing Source Code Pro (not sans) in the code snippets on the page as an example ... I'm seeing those. Are you not? If so, what browser. I can make a Source Sans Pro example as well.

I'm using Chrome on Mac and the page displays with Source Code, but Paul (Hunt) mentioned that he's getting Monaco on his computer.

commadelimited avatar commadelimited commented on July 28, 2024

Ah. Yes, I can confirm that I'm seeing it in the code samples. Problem is that I wasn't expecting to see it there. I know that it's a code font but I was looking for something that shows off the character set and was specifically called out as the font.

Good call though using it for code...duh. :D

miguelsousa avatar miguelsousa commented on July 28, 2024

I know what you mean. Although the code samples are showing off the font in its best setting and as it's meant to be used, it blends in too much with the surroundings. I agree that the page needs a section that can act more like a font specimen.

dwabyick avatar dwabyick commented on July 28, 2024

Yeah. This is a rough example using a predefined template and built by a dev ;). We can put any HTML there. Just showing what we could do reasonably easy via Git pages.

Garbee avatar Garbee commented on July 28, 2024

I think it would be cool to add an ACE editor using the font so people can actually type a little to get a feel for it with their own code. This way someone can get a better feel for using the font without having to download and install it.

adrientetar avatar adrientetar commented on July 28, 2024

@Garbee The contenteditable attribute should be a better fit than a code editor.

from source-sans.

Garbee avatar Garbee commented on July 28, 2024

@adrientetar contenteditable does not do any kind of syntax highlighting, at least not by default. Which means all it is good for is showing you how plain-text would look which is what can already be seen.

adrientetar avatar adrientetar commented on July 28, 2024

I see, thought it was just about the editing capatibility.

A digital specimen with live fonts is now available at http://adobe.github.io/source-sans-pro/
