Currently the only usage of the finishedData property is for Pie Charts. That implementation is within Pie Charts and does indeed require an array. Given that Time Series handles two different visual outputs it makes sense that this method would separate the data. The idea is that it can be used to confirm the correct implementation of filters and grouping within the code. Here is the current return:

{
  "lineData": [
    {
      "group": "Group One",
      "values": [
        {
          "label": "Group One",
          "time": "2013-05-01T07:00:00.000Z",
          "value": 63642.83058384
        }, ...
      ]
    },
    {
      "group": "Group Two",
      "values": [...]
    }
  ],
  "groupedBarData": [
    [
      {
        "group": "Software & Programming",
        "time": "2013-05-15T07:00:00.000Z",
        "value": 63540,
        "label": "Software & Programming",
        "labelTime": "2013-05-15T07:00:00.000Z"
      },
      {
        "group": "Telecommunication",
        "time": "2013-05-15T07:00:00.000Z",
        "value": 31005,
        "label": "Telecommunication",
        "labelTime": "2013-05-15T07:00:00.000Z"
      },
      {
        "group": "Financial analytics software",
        "time": "2013-05-15T07:00:00.000Z",
        "value": 69669,
        "label": "Financial analytics software",
        "labelTime": "2013-05-15T07:00:00.000Z"
      }
    ],
    [...],
    [...],
    [...],
    [...]
  ]
}

Looks correct.

I do think it is weird that every member of the group data is organized by time and the line is organized by item.
