The Color Eraser feature can be accessed by right clicking with the eraser tool selected, as in MS Paint. They merged the two tools into one. If you hover over the 
tool in the toolbox, you'll see the name is "Eraser/Color Eraser"! 😃
As for custom brushes, while it's not the same thing as custom patterns, you can make a selection, enable 
transparent mode in the tool options (or uncheck Image > Draw Opaque) and then smear the selection by holding Shift while dragging it.
I'm closing this issue in favor of #178
